Morning Prayer Monday of week 23 of Ordinary Time

The Reading

James 2:12-13

Talk and behave like people who are going to be judged by the law of freedom, because there will be judgement without mercy for those who have not been merciful themselves; but the merciful need have no fear of judgement.

My Thoughts +++

In this political season, the negative ads have been flying. Every action of each opposing politician has been analyzed and couched in whatever way that will discredit an opponent.  The reading we are presented with today cautions us not to act in this fashion. It is up to we who profess to be Christians not to succumb to judging others by these claims. Rather we should look to the issues at hand – especially how to provide employment and fair wages to all citizens, to make sure every citizen is well fed, and has affordable health care, in the light of the Gospels values we profess. We should prayerfully consider which politicians will bring those Gospel values to fruition and cast our ballot accordingly. On this Labor Day, as the election campaign enters full swing, let us pray for wisdom to guide the electorate as we choose leaders to address the great issues of our day.
